Studio PartnershipA couple months ago, I wrote about the fact that my studio has outgrown its current space. My partner and I have been searching for the perfect location for a while now, and recently hit the jackpot.

Over the years we have cultivated our relationship with a local music store: we’ve sent our students there to purchase music, equipment and instruments, we’ve shopped there ourselves, and we have become friendly with the managers and employees. When I was in buying piano books this winter, I happened to mention that we were looking for a new studio space…and I’m so glad I did.

Just a week or so later, the store manager asked if I would be interested in moving my studio in to their new (gigantic) store. Although we had planned on leasing a standalone space, this prospect was a whole lot more enticing.

Partnering with the music store is a win-win situation for both of us. We don’t have the headache of creating studio space from scratch, maintaining a building, and all the associated costs; they are filling their existing studios and gaining tons of foot traffic.

We’ll be offering some group classes this summer, and moving our studio in August. It’s going to be a huge adjustment, but I’m feeling extremely optimistic. I’ll be sure to document the transition here as we go! For those of you who have a similar partnership and setup: any advice you’d be willing to offer? I would love to hear others’ experiences since this is a brand new adventure for me.
