Why Lessons?

As the fall semester approaches, I and the rest of the Studio of Sarah Strout have been considering how to change up our motivational system in the wake of so many new students. Past systems of everyone receiving a prize is simply no longer practical. And more importantly, it would be a disservice to our students if the goal of lessons was merely a trophy or prize!

inspiration-is-everywhere1_zps626c8735While we outline the details of what the new rewards system will be for those who are truly exceptional in their efforts, I’ve been considering ways to implement more thoroughly the beauty of pursuing music for personal fulfillment.

I want to rotate quotes throughout my studio this school year, and here are just a few I plan to use and discuss with my students:

“I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” ~Billy Joel

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” ~Victor Hugo

“If a composer could say what he had to say with words he would not bother trying to say it in music.” ~Gustav Mahler

I also hope to consistently emphasize problem solving and emotional connection and expression in music with each student during lessons. What are some ways you help your students love to play music?
